How to Initiate a Credit Freeze
I have had many questions on how to initiate a credit freeze. A credit freeze is probably the best strategy to protect yourself when it comes to identity theft. It allows you to lock up or freeze your credit file so no one can get to it. In light of the 143 million consumers that were compromised in the Equifax hack. this is something worth looking into.
There are a few downsides. First, you have to go through the trouble of unlocking your credit if you want to open up an account. Second, it costs round $10 to do it and you have to do it three times. Now it does say in the fine print that they will waive the fee if you have been a victim of identity theft. If you are one that Equifax says has been compromised, I would at least try to get them to waive the fee.
Remember you have 3 credit reporting agencies that hold your files.
If you can, lock up those credit files with a security freeze. Here are the links!
